MAY TO THE CENTER OF THE THEATER THING

Translated by: Wilson Muriel Quintero.

After the favourable welcome that spectacles like O marinheiro and Angelitos Empantanados (Little bogged-down angels) have had, Matacandelas did not disappoint the expectations created by its return to the Island. This time the Colombian group converged to the festival with La chica que quería ser Dios (the girl who wanted to be God), a play that takes place between the theater testimony and the musical comedy. The poet Sylvia Plath's inner contradictions, the warp of her relationships and her work, become the material from which Cristóbal Peláez conceives the staging. Quality playing, actors that can play music, an well organized speech, a luxury design of the lights, and a vibrating rhythm, mark the piece. Nevertheless, for some moments, as much the handled expressive resources as the high and intense tone used by the actors when defending their rolls, become reiterative and mede the spectator to demand a break, a respite.
